At Hast & Company, we are very proud of our employee community. The property management business is known for high turnover and early burnout. This is a very high stress occupation. Like the family doctor, if there are any of those anymore, property managers, property management assistants, on-site managers, and maintenance personnel are on call 24/7 and often get calls in the middle of the night to take care of emergencies at properties in their portfolios. Not responding promptly can lead to significant problems and property damage, so we rely on our people to be available and responsive pretty much all the time.
This being said, we have many people who have been with the company for many years. We have one on-site manager who has worked for us for twenty-seven years. Most of our 45 employees have worked for us more than five years. This stability leads to higher level of service to our clients since we become very familiar with their properties and do not keep needing to start over from scratch. In addition, we are large enough that when we do have a position turnover, there is always at least one other person who is still familiar with the property and its issues and usually two or three.
We have a very strong support structure comprised of our long time controller, Ann Berry, her accounting staff, Debe White our office manager, and our office and property management assistants.
We also stress continuing education, not only encouraging everyone on our staff to take classes in their area of specialization, but also paying for it in most cases.
Finally, we try to break up the intensity of our profession with regular office lunches, annual picnics and holiday celebrations, and a monthly in-office massage for all central office employees.
